THE NEED FOR POLITICAL PARTIES IN NIGERIA TO ENSURE THAT THOSE ELECTED UNDER THEIR PARTY RULE ACCORDING TO THE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PARTY.

Political party is guided by ideology. That ideology serves as the belief and thrust of the party. It serve as a compass that guide the party. Any political party without defined ideology, aims and objectives is like a vehicle without tyre.

Every Political party has a defined aims and objectives encapsulated in their constitution, including other salient things about the party. The aims and objectives are the mission, vision and blueprint of the party. Activities of the party, including those elected under such party is geared towards the aims and objectives of the party. This aims and objectives are what the masses look into squarely before supporting a certain political party. Though in Nigeria, due to apathy and lack of political orientation, people give support to a party that is ready to share money and branded items during Election but in developed nation, party ideology, its aims and objectives are considered before giving support for the party.

However, what is the major challenges facing political parties in Nigeria is the inability of those elected under such party to rule in tandem with the aims and objectives of the party that gave them mandate. The party Leadership have failed to monitor the activities of those elected under their platform to ensure that they are ruling in accordance with the aims and objectives. This has been a clog on the wheels of political parties in Nigeria. When individuals holding various elected positions are not representing effectively, it will definitely affect the party that gave such individuals ticket. While criticising the person directly, the masses will not spare the party. Just like in the case of APC, people would say that Buhari led Government is bad or that APC led Government is bad. In this case, whatever Buhari does is been linked to APC.

To mitigate this challenge, leadership of different political parties should set up a Committee that will be saddled with the responsibility of checkmating the activities of those they gave mandate. Sometimes the party Leadership should embark on project tour to see what those elected as Governors, NASS members, House of Assembly members and LG Chairmen are doing for the masses in their Area.

Ward Councillors, Council Chairmen, State legislatures, National Assembly members, Governor’s or President elected under a certain party should try as much as possible to rule in conformity with the aims and objectives of the party that gave them mandate. The two major political party in Nigeria which PDP and APC has aims and objectives embossed on their constitution. When examine critically, you will found out that most of their activities does not reflect on the aims and objectives. And yet, the leadership of the party is not perturbed. Those steering the wheels of political parties in Nigeria are only interested in what those elected under their party will offer them. Whether the person is doing well or not is not their headache. Some state Governors are owing workers, retirees and refuse to recruit people into the civil service and yet, the leadership of the party that gave them mandate cares less. Some Governors made some policies that seems not to be favourable with the masses thereby giving the party a bad name and still yet, the leadership of their party is not concerned. This portend great disservice to political parties. If someone elected under a particular party is not doing well, the masses will classify the person and party as bad one.

I’ve carefully studied the constitution of PDP as amended in 2014. Critical look on the achievements and policies of those elected under the party in various political positions shows that they have shifted from the aims and objectives of the PDP.

If the political parties in Nigeria begins compelling those elected on their platform to rule in tandem with the party’s objectives and aims not according to their own wish, It will help to salvage governance and make those holding position to be more responsive.

It is therefore important, that the party Leadership should brace up with this challenge and ensure that those elected under their platform are ruling in accordance with the, ideology, aims and objectives of the party to save the party from been abhorred and criticized by the Masses.
