Dr. Olumide Ayeni was born in the early Sixties at the United Kingdom, He is a Legal Practitioner, Arbitrator, Notary Public, Chartered Conciliator and Mediator.
A member of Professional bodies such as Nigeria Bar Association, Fellow Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Fellow Chartered Institute of Mediator and Conciliators Member body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria. An expertise in Civil Litigation, Corporate Law and International Arbitration Matters, Public Law and Judicial Review, Economic Crimes, Maritime Law, Constitutional Law and Electoral Law.
He is Principal Partner and Head of Chambers of Messrs Olumide Ayeni SAN & Co. He holds an LL.B (Hons) Degree from the Premier University of Ibadan (1987), a BL from the Nigerian Law School (1988), LL.M from the University College London, University of London (1991) and a Ph.D from the University of Southampton, UK (1999). Dr. Ayeni specializes in Corporate and International Commercial Law, and has extensive experience in foreign loan syndication for Nigerian Projects, importation/repatriation of foreign capital, investments and dividends. He has extensive experience as an expert in Commercial Arbitration, Trade and Industrial Law, Legal Aspects of International Finance, Maritime Law, Economic Crimes and Torts. He has served at various times, as an adviser to the Bureau of Public Enterprises in review of Legal/Regulatory processes of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigerian Railway Corporation and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria among others.
He has also participated in the Bureau of public Enterprises Organized Workshop Concerning Competition and Anti-Trust Measures in the National Industrial/ Trade Policy. In 2001, he advised the Nigerian Communications Commission during the GSM Bidding/Licensing Process on fresh regulatory framework as a Junior Counsel to Aare Afe Babalola, CON San and Mr Paul Usoro, (now SAN). He has equally undertaken various forms of dispute settlement through the process of Arbitration, Mediation and Conciliation both in Nigeria and internationally. He was a member, Legal Advisory Team on the Privatisation of the British Railways and is a Registered Arbitrator with the Nigerian Communications Commission. He was appoint Honorary Special Adviser on Legal matters & Governance to the Ogun State Governor (20110 and General Counsel and Consultant to the Ogun State Governor (2013-2015). He was also a Legal Consultant to the Canadian High Commission, Nigeria up until 29th October, 2015 when he was appointed the Attorney General and Honourable Commissioner for Justice, Ogun State, a position he held up until the 29th May, 2019; when he returned to private legal practice. He was sworn as a Notary Public of Nigeria in 2011 and served as a Rapporteur, national Political Reform Conference in 2014. During his tenure of office as the 17th Attorney General of Ogun State he introduced guided or piloted a total of about forty seven (47) flagship Legislations including the Administration of Criminal Justice and Other Related matters Law of Ogun State, 2017 adjudged to be the best in Nigeria, the Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution and other Related Matters Law of Ogun State, 2017 the first in the annals of the history of Ogun State and indeed other States in Nigeria excluding Lagos; and the Prohibition of Forcible occupation of landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Cultism, Other Violent and Related Offences law of Ogun State, 2016 which has been sought for with a view to introducing similar legislations in Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo and Ibom States as well as studied with a view to modifying for better enhancement similar earlier legislation in Lagos State.
In his career as a Legal Practitioner, Dr. Ayeni has delivered several papers to distinguished legal audiences and circles including the Nigerian Bar Association, Ibadan, Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja; Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja branches; 2016 Nigerian Bar Association Conference at Port Harcourt; Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), Abuja Branch and at the 2019 Consulate General of the united States Conference on International Human Rights where he delivered the key note Address. As the Chief Legal officer of Ogun State, Dr, Ayeni led and handled more than three dozen criminal appeal defences of important consideration chiefly at the Supreme Court and also at the Court of Appeals as well as several important civil cases including in the areas of commercial law, arbitration, constitutional and land litigations/actively in private practice and during his time as Attorney General of Ogun State. He also led the defence of Ogun State Government’s interests in negotiations, tax and revenue litigations, mediations and issued Legal Advices on wide ranging issues spanning Public International Law (Nigeria/Benin Republic International Boundary dispute); Inter State Boundary dispute matters especially with Oyo, Ondo and Lagos States variously.
He was a Member of the 14-man Transition Committee of the Government of Ogun state in 2011 and has contributed to the Bureau of Public Enterprises NSPMC (Mint) and Port Concession Schemes as well as in organized Workshop on Competition and Anti-Trust Measures including the Draft Nigerian Industrial Trade Policy. He has been either Counsel, Arbitrator pr Mediator/Conciliator in a large number of ADR matters and took silk when he was sworn as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria on 14th December, 2020. He is an Impact Maker, a father to all, a philanthropist, a mentor and a role model whose act of benevolence and selflessness have endeared him to many.
